How to Travel from Kathmandu to Dhap (By Bus, Jeep)

WANT TO KNOW HOW TO GET FROM KATHMANDU TO DHAP?

You’ve come to the right place! I travelled from Kathmandu to Dhap when I did the Pikey Peak Trek, and getting to Dhap might be a long bus journey but it is not too bad to get there.

Dhap (or also called as Dhap Bazaar) is a small village with just a few houses and is a popular starting point to the Pikey Peak Trek.

Dhap is 230 km from Kathmandu and can be reached by daily buses or jeeps. The buses and jeeps leave from Chabahil (Kathmandu) between 5-6 am in the morning and take 8 hours to get to Dhap.

Both the buses and jeeps take around the same time to get from Kathmandu to Dhap. If you are not sure whether to take the bus or jeeps, it is better to take the bus as it is more comfortable than the jeep.

Here is all the information you need on how to get from Kathmandu to Dhap!

Generally, people think that taking the jeep is faster than taking the bus. On this route from Kathmandu to Dhap, actually, both the bus and jeep takes around the same time.

This is due to that although the jeep officially leaves from Chabahil at 5 am but it then goes around picking up the passengers from their home.

The positive to this is that you can also ask to be collected from your home/hotel but expect that it could take up to 1.5 hours to pick up all the passengers and start the actual drive to Dhap.

If you decide to go by jeep, ask at the ticket counter to pick you up from a location near your hotel/home.

Kathmandu to Dhap Jeep Ticket Price

The jeep ticket from Kathmandu to Dhap costs Rs. 2,000.

If you buy it at a travel agency or through your hotel, they usually add some commission so it will be a little bit more expensive. If you buy your ticket at the ticket counter in Chabahil, then you will pay for the actual price only.

How to Buy the Bus/Jeep Ticket to Dhap

If it’s your first time in Nepal, the easiest way to buy the ticket to Dhap is at travel agencies in Thamel. You can also ask at your hotel as usually they are also able to arrange bus tickets for travellers.

Chabahil Bus Ticket Counter

You can buy the bus/jeep tickets directly at the Chabahil Bus Ticket Counter.

You can get to the Chabahil Bus Ticket Counter by taking a taxi. You will get the best taxi prices if you book one through one of the Nepali taxi apps (Pathao or InDrive). The Pathao and InDrive apps are the Nepali equivalent of Uber.

Travel Agency or Hotel

If you are staying in Thamel, there are many travel agencies where you can get bus or jeep tickets.

You can also inquire at your hotel as theys can also arrange bus or jeep tickets for guests.

Travel agencies and hotels usually add some commission on top of the price but it is the most convenient and hassle free option.

When to Buy the Bus/Jeep Ticket

Generally, I recommend to buy the ticket 2 days ahead of travel. You normally do not have to plan too far ahead in Nepal and there are tickets available even on the day of the travel.

💡 Note: The only exception to this is in October-November when Nepal celebrates the Dashain and Tihar festivals. During this time, it is good to buy the bus tickets 5-6 days ahead as many Nepalis travel home for the holidays and the buses fill up quickly.

Is it Faster to Go by Bus or Jeep?

When going from Kathmandu to Dhap, the buses and jeeps take more or less the same.

I thought the jeep would be faster than the bus but it is not. The jeep spends about an hour picking up passengers in Kathmandu in the morning and then arrives in Dhap around the same time as the bus.

Once I took the jeep and none of the passengers came to get on the jeep in Chabahil (the official pick up location). So the time the jeep spends picking up passengers around Kathmandu, the bus is already on the way.

Jeep vs Bus: Which One is Better for You?

The bus is generally more comfortable as the jeeps can get very crammed if there are a lot of passengers.

The time it takes to get to Dhap Bazaar is about the same whether you take the bus or the jeep.

Unless if you hire a private jeep for the journey, that’s the fastest and most comfortable way to go.
