Budapest in January is the coldest time of the year to visit the city but there are still many things you can do. January is low season and it is a good time to visit Budapest if you want to visit at a time when there are not that many tourists around.

The average temperature is between -2.7 to 2 °C (27-36 °F) and you have the highest chance for snow at this time. I was in Budapest last January and there was a lot of snow. It is rare for it to snow that much but it can happen!

On my visit, my favourite things to do were chilling in the warm thermal baths, going on a river cruise (heated in the winter), and to explore the attractions in the snow!

Budapest Weather in January

January is winter season in Budapest and it is the coldest time of the year. I always find the weather in January dark and gloomy as it starts to turn dark around 4 pm in the afternoon.

When you are outside, make sure to dress in layers, wear a warm winter coat, hat, gloves and boots. After spending a few hours outside in the winter, it gets really cold, even if you are dressed in warm layers. When I start to feel cold, I like to take a coffee break and warm up in-between sightseeing.
