1 Day in Budapest: Itinerary and Best Things to Do (2026)

Budapest is such a great city! Its got everything you need from river cruises to thermal baths, and from amazing food to beautiful architecture.

Most people spend at least 3-4 days in the city but with good planning, you can explore the major attractions even if you just have 1 day in Budapest!

It may feel stressful to try to see everything in one day but the major attractions are all in the city center, so you can cover many of them. You can even hire a taxi to take you to the most famous attractions that can save you time and energy.

With only one day in Budapest, I recommend visiting the Parliament, Heroes’ Square, Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle, and St. Stephen’s Basilica in the morning. Then, go to the thermal baths in the afternoon to relax, and finish the day by going on a river cruise in the evening.

1 Day in Budapest Itinerary

When my friends come to visit me in Budapest and they only have a short time, this is the exact itinerary we use so they can see the best of Budapest!

MORNING

With only one day in Budapest, you should start the day early so you can cover the top attractions in the city.

There are five major sites in the city that I recommend not to miss. They are the Parliament, Heroes’ Square, and St. Stephen’s Basilica (on the Pest side) and the Fisherman’s Bastion and Buda Castle (on the Buda side).

Budapest is walkable and it is nice to explore the city on foot, however, to cover the major attractions in the morning, it is best to hire a taxi to take you to the major sites.

I once hired a taxi to take my friends to the most famous sites in Budapest and we covered 5 major attractions in 3 hours. The driver took us to the sites we wanted to visit and then waited while we walked around and took photos at each place. In total, the taxi cost USD 50 for 3 hours but we split the cost within our group – it worked out pretty well!

The taxi in Budapest is more affordable than in western Europe. For example, if you hire a taxi, it will go on the meter and cost you around USD 16/hour (including time when the taxi waits for you while you walk around the attractions). Make sure the taxi driver goes on the meter!

I would say hiring a taxi for a few hours is the fastest and most comfortable way to see the major attractions in Budapest in one day. You can always discuss with the taxi driver which places you’d like to visit and how much time you’d like to spend at each place.

Alternatively, the public transport in Budapest is extensive and reliable. You can also take the public transport to explore places in Budapest, however, it would take more time and would make you more tired if you have a limited time in the city.

PARLIAMENT

If you only have 1 day in Budapest, visiting the Hungarian Parliament is a must!
Hungarian Parliament

If you only have one day in Budapest, visiting the Hungarian Parliament is a must! It is located by the River Danube and its architecture is really beautiful.

It is free if you just want to walk around the building and see it from the outside. They also run tours if you want to visit inside the Parliament. The tickets sell out far in advance, so you should plan it well ahead of time.

It is possible to walk around the Parliament and see the design up close, however, I found that you can get the best views from the other side of the river at Batthyány Square.

HEROES’ SQUARE

Visiting the Heroes Square is a must in your 1 day in Budapest itinerary.
Heroes’ Square, Budapest

The Heroes’ Square (“Hősök tere” in Hungarian) is another iconic spot in Budapest. The monument features the statues of the Seven chiefs of the Magyars (Hungarian tribe), and other Hungarian national leaders.

Even if you are not that much into history, the square is a must-see site in Budapest. It is located right next to the City Park where they have boating in the summer, and ice-skating in the winter. Plus, there are two museums right next to it, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Arts.

FISHERMAN’S BASTION

Fisherman's Bastion in Budapest, Hungary.
Fisherman’s Bastion, Budapest

The Fisherman’s Bastion is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Budapest. If you are deciding which places to visit in Budapest in a day, the Fisherman’s Bastion should definitely be included!

It is not only that it’s beautiful but it overlooks Budapest and the River Danube, so you also get really great views of the city!

In peak tourist seasons (summer, Christmas), it can get very crowded during the day, so if you are visiting at a busy time, I recommend coming here early morning.

BUDA CASTLE

Buda Castle in Budapest, Hungary.
Buda Castle, Budapest

The Buda Castle is just a short walk from the Fisherman’s Bastion, so the two places can be visited in one go. As with most famous attractions in Budapest, it is free to walk around the Castle, but if you want to enter, you have to get a ticket.

The Castle also houses the Budapest Historical Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Széchenyi National Library. If you want to enter, it may take a long time, so in this case, you would have to revise your 1-day Budapest itinerary.

You can also get pretty epic views of the Castle from the Pest side in case you don’t have time to visit it.

ST. STEPHEN’S BASILICA

St. Stephen’s Basilica is in downtown Budapest close to the Parliament. If you are staying in the city center of Budapest, you can even walk to the Basilica and then to the Parliament in one go. Although if you only have one day in Budapest, I recommend taking a taxi to help you explore the city, it is also possible to walk it.

The Basilica is named after king St. Stephen who was the founder of the Hungarian State (if you like historical facts). There is also a lookout on top of the Basilica from where you get really nice views of the city!

AFTERNOON

THERMAL BATHS

Széchenyi Thermal Bath

After exploring the main tourist attractions in Budapest in the morning, the best way to relax in the afternoon is to go to one of the thermal baths in Budapest.

Budapest is well known for its thermal baths and there are many to choose from! Two of the most popular thermal baths are the Széchenyi Thermal Bath and the Gellért Thermal Bath.

Book a Day Ticket to the Széchenyi Thermal Bath: biggest thermal bath in Budapest with 18 pools, spa, sauna and more! (Rated 4.3/5 ⭐ on 22,721 Reviews)

If you are looking for less touristy thermal baths, check out Veli Bej Baths, Lukács Baths or Rudas Baths.

The Budapest thermal baths have both indoor and outdoor baths, as well as hot and cold water baths.

The best thing is if you happen to visit Budapest in the winter when it snows. One time I went to the thermal baths when it was snowing and it’s really cool being in the outdoor hot water pool while it is snowing.

RIVER DANUBE CRUISE

One of the best things to do in Budapest is to go on a boat cruise on the River Danube. Budapest is split into two sides by the River Danube and my favourite view of the city is from a cruise on the river.

In the evenings, the famous buildings are decorated with lights, so that’s the best time for a river cruise.

There are various river cruises in Budapest that you can choose from, either a simple river cruise, a cruise with traditional Hungarian dinner or there is also an option for cruises with dinner and live music.

Is Budapest Safe?

People ice-skating at the City Park in Budapest, Hungary.

Budapest is generally a very safe city, even for solo female travelers. I have found it safe even when I go out late night. However, you should remain cautious like you would in any other city.

The most common crime in Budapest is pickpocketing, so I recommend being careful of your belongings in crowded places, especially on public transport and in bars.

Although Budapest is safe, you should exercise normal precautions. Whenever I travel, I always get travel insurance for my trips in case of emergencies. Sometimes, even the best plans fail, and that’s where travel insurance comes in.

I have been using SafetyWing travel insurance for my international trips for the last few years. I have found SafetyWing great as it is one of the most affordable international travel insurance companies, and you can get it even after you have started your trip.

For a short trip to Budapest, I recommend getting the SafetyWing Essential plan. It covers lost luggage, stolen belongings, and emergency medical treatments. In case you are planning to stay in Budapest long-term, then the SafetyWing Complete Plan is better as it is more extensive and covers routine medical care as well.

I once had an emergency dental treatment abroad and after submitting all the documents, SafetyWing reimbursed me in less than a month! The best thing was that even though I paid in the local currency, I could get reimbursed in US Dollars.

Other Things to Do in Budapest

Apart from the highlights I recommended above for spending one day in Budapest, there are still many other things to do in the city!

Want to explore a traditional Hungarian market and indulge in Hungarian delicacies? Head to the Central Market Hall! Want to have a fun night at Budapest’s unique bars? Don’t miss the ruin bars!

Visit the Central Market Hall

The Central Market Hall is a traditional Hungarian market where you can get Hungarian delicacies such as salami, pickles and spices. I love trying food in new places, and the market is also a good place to buy some Hungarian souvenirs.

Go for a Night Out at the Ruin Bars

Budapest is famous for its nightlife and ruin bars are the most unique bars in the city. They have a unique atmosphere with funny furniture, like bath tubs for chairs, and even furniture stuck to the ceiling.

Ruin bars are a fun place to be, and a good place to take photos or the unique design. Instant and Szimpla Kert are two of the most popular ruin bars in Budapest!

Go to a Museum Exhibition

I am a big fan of museums whether it’s to visit an art exhibition or to learn more about history. Budapest has lots of museums, and my favourites are the Museum of Fine Arts, Hall of Arts, House of Terror, Museum of Ethnography, and the Music Museum among others.

Hungarian Food & Restaurants

Hortobágyi Pancake, a traditional Hungarian dish.
Hortobágyi palacsinta (pancake)

Even if you’re in Budapest just for a day, you must try Hungarian food. Some of the traditional Hungarian dishes include the goulash soup, pörkölt (beef stew), hortobágyi pancake (crepe filled with meat), lángos (deep fried dough with sour cream), and chimney cake.

I heard from so many travelers that even though you can have chimney cake all over Europe, the best one is in Hungary. So, don’t miss it!
