Wondering what Spring Season in Nepal is Like?
Spring is one of my favourite seasons in Nepal and it is also one of the best times to visit Nepal. I love it when the weather starts to turn warm, the flowers start to bloom and the weather is perfect to go trekking or hiking.
Spring in Nepal runs from March to May and it is the second most popular time to visit Nepal. The most popular being in the Autumn, between October and November.
The weather during Spring is sunny with clear skies, thus it provides a great time to go trekking and see the Himalayas.
It most areas it does not snow during the Spring season in Nepal, only in altitudes higher than 3,000 metres. So, if you plan to go trekking in the Spring season in Nepal you might still experience snowfall in March or April.

Spring season in Nepal typically runs from March to May.
The beginning of March is still a bit cold, especially at night, however, it starts to get warm and by April, it feels like proper summer time.

The weather in Spring in Nepal is mostly sunny, warm and provides clear views of the Himalayas. Thus, it is one of the best times to visit Nepal in the Spring.
Nepal Temperature in Spring
The temperature slightly varies depending on where you are during Spring in Nepal. The Himalayan, mountainous region in the north of Nepal is the coldest place in Sring. If you go trekking, there could still be some snow in March or even April.
Whereas, the average temperature in the Hilly region of Nepal is between 8-31 C in Nepal in Spring. The hilly region is the most pleasant place to be in Nepal in Spring.
Himalayan Region Temperature in Spring:
The mountainous region of Nepal is in the northern part of the country (e.g. Annapurna, Everest Region). It includes the areas of the Himalayas, so you would experience Spring in this region if you go trekking.
During Spring, the day times are sunny, however, it still gets very cold in high altitudes. In March and April, there is still a slight chance for it to snow above 3,000 metres so if you want to be sure, pack some crampons in case it snows.
Hilly Region Temperature in Spring:
The hilly region of Nepal (e.g. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bandipur) is warm and sunny during the Spring season in Nepal.
It is only a bit cold in the evenings in the beginning of March in the evenings but otherwise, the weather is great for sightseeing and hiking.
Tarai Region Temperature in Spring:
The southern, Tarai region of Nepal (Chitwan, Janakpur, Bardia, Koshi Tappu) tends to get hotter in Spring in Nepal.
The temperatures start to get hot in March in the Tarai and by April and May, it is really hot.
How Cold is Spring Season in Nepal
It is only the beginning of March that the temperatures are cold, however, from mid-March the weather starts to get warm. By April and May the weather is warm and feels like summer.
In the Spring it only really gets cold in high altitudes, if you go trekking above 3,000 metres.
Does it Snow in Nepal in Spring?
During Spring in Nepal, there is a chance for it to snow above 3,000 metres only. In most of the areas in Nepal, it does not snow, not even in the winter. It only snows in higher altitudes above 3,000 metres.
This means, that you are most likely to experience snowfall if you are trekking in Nepal in March or April above 3,000 metres. If you stay in places like Kathmandu, Pokhara or Chitwan, there is no possibility for it to snow.
You might have a chance to catch snowfall in hill stations around Kathmandu in March but chance is very slim. Places near Kathmandu (like Chandragiri, Kakani or Phulchowki Hill) might receive some snowfall around February-March but usually it only snows a little and the snow melts away quickly.

As spring is the high season in Nepal, there are many visitors around this time and the trekking routes are busy with trekkers.
Prices
All hotels operate at full price during the Spring season in Nepal. It is the main tourist season, so you will not find discounted rates like they have during the off seasons (Monsoon or Winter) in Nepal.
When is the Best Time to Visit Nepal?
The best time to visit Nepal is between October–November and March–April.
The weather is the most pleasant and clear during these times, which makes it the most favourable time for trekking.

1. Kathmandu in Spring

The average temperature is between 8 – 29 C in Kathmandu during Spring.
The beginning of March is still cold in the evenings in Kathmandu but then it starts to get warmer and by April, the weather feels like proper summertime.
Does it Snow in Kathmandu in Spring?
No, it is rare for it to snow in Kathmandu in general and it is not usual for it to snow in the Spring.
The last proper snowfall in Kathmandu was in 1945. Since then, it has only snowed two more times (2007 and 2019) but it was very light snow and didn’t last long.
There might be some snowfall in the hills around Kathmandu around January-March but it is not so likely. Also, if it does snow in the hills around Kathmandu, usually, it is not permanent snow and it melts away quickly.
On a rare occasion it snows in Chandragiri (in the Kathmandu Valley) or in Kalinchowk around February-March.
What’s the Best Time to Visit Kathmandu
A good time to visit Kathmandu is from mid-September to May. However, the weather is the most pleasant between October-November and March-April.
Nevertheless, Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal and there are many activities to do all year around.

Spring is one of the main seasons in Nepal and thus there are many tourists in Kathmandu.
Kathmandu is the place where all tourists arrive and stay before and after going on a trek. So, usually in the Spring, Thamel (the main tourist hub in Kathmandu) is full of tourists.

The best time to visit Bandipur is between October to Mid-December and February-April. During this time, the temperature is pleasant and the views are generally clear to see the Himalayas.
Overall, it is a good time to visit Bandipur anytime from late September until the end of May but it can get very cold in the evenings in the winter months.

Visiting Bandipur in Spring
Bandipur is a beautiful little town on the way between Kathmandu and Pokhara and is a popular stop to enjoy Himalayan views, go hiking or just chill at one of the cafes and restaurants.
Bandipur is famous for its well-preserved Newari architecture (wooden carved windows and red bricks).
It is so charming with its architecture and restaurants on the main street that it is often compared to being in Belgium or France.
Although, the nights are still cold in Bandipur in the beginning of March, Spring is one of the best times to visit Bandipur.

4. Chitwan National Park in Spring

The average temperature in Chitwan in Spring is between 11 – 29 C. Chitwan is the southern part of Nepal and tends to get hotter than Kathmandu.
The temperatures start to get warm in March and then becomes really hot in April and May. If you visit Chitwan during this time, make sure to pack plenty of water, sunscreen and a sun hat as it will be very hot and sunny if you go for a jungle safari.
What’s the Best Time to Visit Chitwan?
The best time to visit Chitwan is in February-March. Between February-March, the grass inside the Chitwan National Park is lower and thus, the visibility is better to spot wildlife.
Generally, Chitwan can be visited anytime from mid-September to May and have a chance of spotting wildlife. However, during the monsoon season (June-August), the grass grows very high due to the rain. So, if you are visiting Chitwan straight after the monsoon season, it will be more difficult to spot wildlife due to the grass.
If you really want to spot wildlife, it is best to go for 1-3 whole day safari inside the Chitwan National Park, as the deeper into the park you go, the more chance you have of spotting tigers.
If you visit Chitwan in April or May, the temperatures will be very high but it is still pre-monsoon season so it is a good time to visit Chitwan.

Visiting Chitwan in Spring
March is one of the best times to visit Chitwan as the best time to spot wildlife is between February and March.
Around January-February, the villagers cut some of the grass inside the national park. With the lower level of grass, it makes it easier to spot wildlife in March.
In April and May the weather gets hotter but it is still a good time to visit Chitwan before the monsoon starts.

The average temperature is between 16-37 C in Bardia in Spring. Bardia is in the southern part of Nepal and gets hotter in the Spring than Kathmandu.
By March, the weather is hot in Bardia and if you visit during this time, make sure to pack sunscreen and sunhat if you go on a jungle safari.

6. Tansen in Spring

The average temperature in Tansen in Spring is between 11-31 C.
Tansen is a great place to visit in Spring as it is one of the less touristy places in Nepal that has a small town charm and nice views of the Himalayas.
What’s the Best Time to Visit Tansen?
The best time to visit Tansen is between October-November or March-April which is when you will have the best views of the Himalayas. This makes visiting Tansen during Spring a great time to visit.
However, generally, anytime between October-May is considered a good time.
The least favourable time to visit Tansen is during the monsoon season (June-August), however, there are plenty of things to do in Tansen if you happen to be there when it rains.
Visiting Tansen in Spring
Tansen remains one of the less visited places in Nepal and is the perfect getaway to experience a small Nepali town.
Tansen has some really good homestays where the owners are really friendly and can recommend a lot of activities in Tansen.
On a clear day, Tansen has great views of the Himalayan range and if you visit during the Autumn Season, you will get really good views of the mountains.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Lumbini?
The best time to visit Lumbini is between October to November and Mid-February to April.
Lumbini is in the south of Nepal and it gets very hot and humid between May-August.
While in the winter months (December-February), it gets very little sunshine, thus, it can even get colder than Kathmandu.

March is a great time to visit Lumbini as the weather is warm but it is not too hot yet. From April, the weather starts to get hotter and by May, the temperature is very hot.
Thus, it is best to visit Lumbini before it gets very hot in May. However, the birthday of Buddha is usually celebrated in May. So if you would like to visit Lumbini during Buddha’s birthday, it can be interesting. Just make sure you have sunscreen with you to protect against the sun.

The best time to visit Gorkha is between October to Mid-December and Mid-February to May. During this time, the temperature is pleasant, and the views are usually clear to see the Himalayas.
Generally, it is a good time to visit Gorkha anytime from late September until the end of May.

Gorkha is a small town on the way between Kathmandu and Pokhara, and it is a historically significant place in Nepali history.
Nepal used to be made of many smaller kingdoms and Prithvi Narayan Shah, the king of the Gorkha Kingdom, started the unification process of Nepal. Gorkha is also known as the place where the Gurkha soldiers originate from.
If you visit Gorkha, the sunrise is really beautiful from the Gorkha Durbar. You can get up there in about 30-45 minutes from the town centre.

Janakpur lies in the southern part of Nepal and in the Spring, Monsoon and Autumn seasons it gets much hotter than Kathmandu.
In March the temperature in Janakpur is still not so hot but then in April and May, the weather gets really hot. It is still a good time to visit but make sure to prepare for the hot weather by packing sunscreen and light clothes.

After the autumn season, the Spring season is the second best time to visit Janakpur. The temperatures are too cold during the winter and too hot and humid during the monsoon in Janakpur.
In March the temperature in Janakpur is still not so hot but then in April and May, the weather gets really hot. It is still a good time to visit but make sure to prepare for the hot weather by packing sunscreen and light clothes.
Janakpur is mostly famous for its Hindu temples and those coming here to perform praying ceremonies.
Apart from the temples, Janakpur also has Nepal’s only railway station, so it can be fun to check it out. But to be honest, the railway station is very small, so can be a bit disappointing.
Janakpur is also known for Mithila paintings which you will see painted on walls all around the city. The town is also close to India, so there are a lot of Indian snacks and sweets available in Janakpur.

10. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in Spring
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve Weather in Spring
The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is located in the southern, Tarai region of Nepal. The Tarai region usually gets much hotter in the Spring than Kathmandu.
March is still not as hot but it starts to get gradually hotter and by April and May, the temperature is very hot in Koshi Tappu.
What’s the Best Time to Visit Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve?
The best time to visit the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is between October to March.
There are different reasons to visit the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve depending on the seasons. Each season is characterized by the best chances of spotting specific animals.
Depending on the season, you are likely to see the following animals:
- October – November: summer migratory birds
- December – January: winter migratory birds
- Mid-February – March: wild elephants
- All year round: Arna (wild water buffalo), Gangetic dolphin

Koshi Tappu is the most popular place for spotting the winter migratory birds and if you visit in December-January, then you are in luck!
The beginning of the Spring season in Nepal is still a good time to visit but from April, the weather gets very hot.
After the monsoon starts in June, Koshi Tappu is too hot to visit and is one of the least favourable time to spot wildlife.

Trekking in Nepal in March
March is the start of the main trekking season in the Spring and the trekking trails start to get busy with trekkers. The beginning of March is still less busy and then from mid-March, it gets busier.
There can still be some snow expected in altitudes above 3,000 metres in March so it is good to pack crampons.
Trekking in Nepal in April
April is the main trekking season and with the spring season, the trekking trails are beautiful with blooming rhododendron trees.
In April it is less likely to experience snow but the weather patterns can be unpredictable so it can still snow above 3,000 metres.
April generally provides clear views of the Himalayas and good weather for trekking. The day time is sunny but it still gets cold in high altitudes in the evenings.
Trekking in Nepal in May
May is the end of the Spring season in Nepal and sometime pre-monsoon rains start in May. May is still considered one of the best times to go trekking in Nepal. However, from mid-May, some sporadic rain can be expected.
The start of monsoon season in Nepal can slightly change every year – thus, one year the monsoon can start early in May and the next year, monsoon can start late at the end of June.
So, if you plan to trek in May in Nepal, just be aware that there is a possibility of a little bit of rain.

- Crampons: for trekking safely on snowy and icy trails (there can still be snowfall in places above 3,000 metres in March and April)
- Nalgene water bottle: you can fill the bottle with hot water, put it inside your sleeping at night and it will work like a heater

Festivals in Nepal in Spring
Nepal is known for its many festivals and holidays, with the main holiday season falling in October-November.

Maha Shivaratri Festival
- When: March
Maha Shivaratri is a major Hindu festival in Nepal, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It usually falls in February or March and it celebrates the marriage between Lord Shiva and Parvati.
Maha Shivaratra is celebrated at the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. The temple is usually crowded with devotees on this day. I once tried to check out the celebrations there but it was so busy with long queues that I decided to turn back.
Holi Festival
- When: March
In the Hindu mythology, Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is a fun festival and in the morning people celebrate it by throwing coloured powder on each others.
The best places to play Holi is by the Durbar Square in Kathmandu (although it can get very crowded) or by Lakeside in Pokhara.
Nepali New Year and Bisket Jatra
- When: April
The Nepali New Year is celebrated in the middle of April and it usually falls around the same date as the Bisket Jatra Festival.
Nepal follows the Bikram Sambat, which is a lunar calendar following the cycles of the moon. An interesting fact is that the Bikram Sambat is 57 years ahead of the Gregorian Calendar. So for example 2024 is the year 2081 in Nepal.
Bhaktapur holds an annual Bisket Jatra festival around the time of the Nepali New Year. It is celebrated by pulling big chariots across Bhaktapur. So if you are in Kathmandu at this time, it is worth checking out Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur.
Buddha Jayanti

Buddha Jayanti is the celebration of Buddha’s birthday. It is an important Buddhist holiday and the best place to observe the celebration is in Lumbini, Nepal.
Lumbini is said to be the birthplace of Buddha and on this day many people come to celebrate and offer worship at the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini.
What to Wear in Nepal in Spring
Spring season in Nepal starts in March. Although the beginning of March still gets cold at nights, the days are sunny.
In April the weather starts to get like proper summer time and so if you are visiting Nepal in the Spring, you can pack summer clothes and a few warmer clothes for the evenings.
If you go trekking, you should pack extra items for trekking that will keep you warm as it can still snow and get cold in high altitudes.
