I live in Kathmandu and while there is rainfall in Nepal during monsoon, it usually does not rain that much. However, if you want to go trekking then the best time to visit Nepal is in the autumn or spring.
June is the beginning of monsoon season. In the first 2 weeks of June, there is not that much rain yet, but then from the second half of June, it tends to rain more.
So, the beginning of June is still considered good for trekking. It might rain in the afternoons a bit, but in the mornings you should get clear views of the mountains.
The best things to do in Nepal in June is to trek in Lower Mustang, and explore places in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bandipur and Tansen.

The general weather is very hot and humid in Nepal in June.
Although June is the beginning of the monsoon season, it never rains all day long. Typically, it only rains around 1-2 hours in the afternoon or evening.

It is very rare for it to rain all day long in Kathmandu, so usually you can enjoy the day like any other day even during monsoon.

However, you should still check the weather updates before your trek, as both road and air travel can be affected during monsoon.
I visited Lower Mustang in the beginning of June, and it was so hot and sunny. So, it’s true that while it was rainy in Kathmandu and Pokhara, we had sunny days in Lower Mustang.

The best time to visit Lower Mustang is between October-November and March-April.
However, as Mustang is in the rain shadow region of Nepal, so May and June are also good.
During this time, Lower Mustang receives a lot of daylight, the temperature is warmer and it rarely rains.
Trekking in Lower Mustang during Monsoon
Trekking in Nepal during the monsoon season is generally not recommended as there can be landslides, trekking routes may be impassable, and at lower elevation, the trails are full of leeches.
In addition, getting to the starting point of the trek can also be difficult, such as roads are blocked by landslides, or delayed flights due to bad weather.
Lower Mustang has many villages that are beautiful and offer a glimpse into Tibetan culture. Some of the best places to visit are Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath.

- Hike up to the Thani Mai Temple (watch out for leeches after rain)
- Try Newari food
- Visit the Siddha Gufa cave from Bimalnagar (during monsoon, I don’t recommend the hike from Bandipur to Siddha Gufa as the trail is steep and slippery. If you want to visit Siddha Gufa, go from Bimalnagar as there are stairs leading up to the cave from that side).

They say that the weather in Tansen is always pleasant. It does not get too cold in the winter, and does not get too hot during the summer.
Tansen still receives rainfall during the monsoon however, it typically only rains for 1-2 hours in the afternoon or the evening. It does not rain all day long.
What’s the Best Time to Visit Tansen?
The best time to visit Tansen is between October to mid-December or mid-February to May which is when you have the best views of the Himalayas.
However, generally, anytime between October-May is considered a good time.
Visiting Tansen During Monsoon
Tansen remains still one of the less visited places in Nepal and is the perfect place to experience a small Nepali town.
Tansen has some really good homestays where the owners are really friendly and can recommend a lot of activities in Tansen.
On a clear day, Tansen has great views of the Himalayan range, but if you visit during monsoon season, you will not be able to see it.
Nevertheless, Tansen is a beautiful place and there are other activities you can do apart from seeing the Himalayan views.
The roads can sometimes be blocked by landslides during monsoon, so the only negative side to visiting Tansen during monsoon, is that it may take longer.

The average temperature is between 20-30 °C (68-86 °F) in Pokhara in June. However, due to the humidity, it feels much much hotter.
Pokhara is known as the city in Nepal that receives some of the most rainfall in Nepal during the monsoon season. In June, Pokhara receives about 669 mm rainfall.
In the chart below you can see that it is still not as bad as for example in July, when Pokhara receives 940 mm rainfall!
What is the Best Time to Visit Pokhara?
The very best time to visit Pokhara is between October to mid-December and mid-February to April, however, visiting anytime between October-May is generally a pretty good time.
In the last few years, I had the chance to visit Pokhara during winter (December-January), and the views of the Himalayas was better than in the Spring!
Visiting Pokhara During Monsoon
Pokhara generally receives more rainfall than Kathmandu. I even heard that the wealthier people in Pokhara who have a second home in Kathmandu, usually come to Kathmandu during monsoon to escape the rain.
Nevertheless, I visited Pokhara during monsoon before and it is not too bad. Everything is still open and operational, including all the restaurants, bars, hotels, attractions and museums.
It is true that it is cloudy and there is no view to see the mountains but if it is the only time that you can visit Nepal, you should not miss out on Pokhara.
If you plan to visit Pokhara in June, and deciding between day or night bus, make sure to take the day bus. There can be landslides on the roads during monsoon and it is safer to take the day bus.

Despite the rain, there are still many activities you can do in Pokhara during the monsoon season, including:
- Visiting the caves, gorges and waterfalls
- Museums
- Movie Garden
- Chill by Fewa Lake
- Visit the World Peace Pagoda
- Yoga and sound healing workshops
- Cooking classes
- Day trip to Begnas Lake (+hiking)

The weather in Chitwan in June is very hot and humid. Chitwan is located in the southern part of Nepal, which tends to get much hotter than the hilly region in Nepal.

The very best time to visit Chitwan is between February-March when the grass inside Chitwan National Park is lower and you have better visibility to spot wildlife.

It is a bit tricky to say. If you come specifically to spot tigers and other wildlife, it is more challenging during monsoon. If you are happy to just chill by the riverside and explore some of the cultural attractions, it will still worth a visit.
During monsoon season, sometimes, they even stop the jungle safaris as the jungle trails become impassable due to the rain.
So if you visit Chitwan during this time, check the current weather news, and bear in mind that it may not all go as planned.

- Trekking: It is not safe to go trekking as the trails can be impassable due to landslides. If you still go trekking, go in a group as it is not safe to be trekking solo during monsoon. There are also many leeches on the trails at this time.
- Road travel: Due to the heavy rains, the roads can be obstructed by landslides. If you travel by bus during the monsoon, expect that there may be delays and the road trips could take even longer. It is also safer to take the day bus during monsoon than the night buses, as it is easier to spot landslides during the day.
- Air travel: Flights are often delayed when there is poor visibility in Nepal. If you plan to fly during the monsoon, add a couple of extra days as a buffer in case your flight is delayed.
Packing for Nepal in June
It is very hot and humid during the monsoon season so it is best to bring light clothes. In addition, when packing for Nepal in June, also make sure to bring:
- Umbrella
- Waterproof shoes/sandals
- Rain cover for backpack
