Visiting the historic sites are one of the best things to do in London! There are many famous attractions in London that are must-see during a trip to London.

I always loved about London that it is great to explore on foot. The public transport works well and it’s easy to get from one place to the other. Once you get to one area, it’s nice to walk around and see all the attractions.

There are many attractions in London, so if you have a limited time, it is best to prioritize the ones you are really interested to see.

The main attractions in London include the Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London Eye, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, and the Trafalgar Square.

The number of tourists start to increase due to the summer holidays, so it can be very busy at tourist attractions. Try to get a skip-the-line-ticket for any attractions that have the option (e.g. the London Eye), so you don’t have to wait in the queues.

The weather is warm and sunny in June, so it is a great time to hang out in parks in London. Many parks also have festivals during the summer, with live music or food festivals.

Some of the best parks in London are Regent’s Park, Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, Primrose Hill, Richmond Park, and Greenwich Park.

If you want to visit a hidden gem in London, check out the Secret Garden in Hampstead Heath. It’s officially called as the Hill Garden and Pergola and it was shown to me by one of my British friends. It’s one of the places that not many travellers know about!

WATCH A MOVIE AT AN OUTDOOR CINEMA

Outdoor cinemas are a nice way to see movies during the summer. There are a couple of outdoor cinemas in London and they play a mix of old classics and modern movies.

Some of the best outdoor cinemas in London are Adventure Cinema, Luna Cinema, Pop Up Screens, and the Barbican Outdoor Cinema.

Outdoor cinemas are very popular and get the busiest during the weekends, so if you have the option, it is better to book a movie for a weekday. Nevertheless, even if you go on a weekday, it still gets busy, so it’s good to go early to get a good spot.

GO ON A DAY TRIP

The Brighton Pier in England.
Brighton, England

The weather is pretty warm in June and it is a great time to go on a day trip near London, especially to visit a beach like Brighton Beach!

I always found that London is well-connected to other cities in England, and it is easy to go for a day or weekend trip. There are oganized tours, but you can also just take the train or bus as they work well in England.

Some of the best places that can be visited for a day trip from London are Stonehenge, WindsorCanterbury, Oxford, Brighton, Hastings, and Bath.

If you have time to visit a place outside London, even if for 1 day, it can really be such a great experience to see the English countryside!

VISIT THE KEW GARDENS

Kew Gardens, London
  • Kew Gardens Opening Times: 10 am – 6 pm every day
  • Kew Gardens Tickets: GBP 20-24 (depending if you buy it online/in person and if for weekday or weekend)

The best time to visit the Kew Gardens is in the Spring (April-May) when the flowers are in bloom, but summer is also a pretty good time.

The Kew Gardens is a botanical garden in Richmond, London, and it is the largest botanical garden in the world, with over 50,000 plants.

The Kew Gardens covers a large area and we spent almost the whole day there. The great thing is that they also have cafes and restaurants on site, so it’s possible to take a break to eat and drink.

When I visited the Kew Gardens, some of the places inside that I really liked were the Kew Palace, Treetop Walkway, Palm House, Great Broad Walk Borders, and the Temperate House.

There is also a train that goes around the botanic garden, so if you get tired, it is a good way to get some rest. The train ticket costs GBP 6.50.

WATCH A PLAY AT THE WEST END

West End, London

Watching a play at the West End is a great activity all throughout the year! The West End is known for some of the best theatre plays in London and there are also many restaurants and shops in the area.

When I lived in London, many of my friends came to London just to see a show at the West End, and well, additionally to also catch up with me!

Some of the most popular plays are Wicked, Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Lion King, and the Phantom of the Opera.

The tickets for a show at the West End cost between GBP 30-210 (USD 40-270). To get better prices, try to book the show as early as possible.

One way to get a cheaper ticket, is to go to the ticket booths in the morning. You might be able to get some discounted tickets for the same day, but it is not guaranteed and it is usually for lesser known plays.

VISIT A MUSEUM EXHIBITION

People at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, UK.
Victoria and Albert Museum, London

London has a lot of museums and going to an exhibition helps you to understand the history and culture of the UK better. The museums are open all year around, and have both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

London is so rich in history and culture, and going to a museum exhibition was one of the my go-to weekend activities. I even used to have a yearly membership to Tate Modern, which is the best if you live in London.

Some of the best museums in London:

  • British Museum: collection includes ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman objects
  • Tate Modern: modern and contemporary art
  • Tate Britain: British art from year 1500 to present
  • National Gallery: paintings
  • Victoria and Albert Museum: ceramics, jewellery, photography

SEE THE LONDON SKYLINE

The Shard at Sunset, London

Some of the best places to see London’s skyline and sunset is from the Sky Garden, The Shard, and Horizon 22. They all offer great views of London (360 degree views!), and you can see attractions like the Tower Bridge.

The Shard is the tallest building in London and while you have to pay for entry, I found the experience is more unique than the Sky Garden.

The Sky Garden and Horizon 22 both have a free entry, but are worth a visit to see London’s skyline! You just have to reserve the tickets in advance and make sure to arrive on time, otherwise, they may not let you in.

If you are deciding on which place to go to, the The Shard is a great choice if you want to celebrate a special occasion while in London. I liked the views from the Sky Garden, but The Shard is a more unique experience.

HAVE A DRINK IN A PUB

Pub culture is big in the UK and you haven’t been to London until you have gone to a pub! Many pubs also have beer gardens that are great to hang out at when the weather is warm.

I used to live near Camden and also in East London at one time, so some of my favourite pubs are from those areas! Many pubs also have live bands or comedy shows on – sometimes even for free!

If you are visiting Camden, the Hawley Arms (where Amy Winehouse used to hang out), Elephant’s Head, and the Dublin Castle are great pubs. They usually also have live music on!

Dalston, Stoke Newington and Shoreditch (places in East London) have lots of great pubs! Really, I am not even sure if it would be possible to list all of them. Nevertheless, some of my all time favourites are the Shacklewell ArmsThe Victoria, and The Three Crowns.

If you are looking for a typical British pub in the city center, you can check out the Porterhouse and the The Lamb & Flag near Covent Garden.

HAVE SOME BRITISH FOOD

English Breakfast, a traditional British meal made from beans, sausages, eggs and bacon.
English Breakfast

Trying the local cuisine in a new place is always a must-do! So, while you are in London, you should try as much local food as possible.

The food in London is very diverse, and you can find many restaurants that serve food from all around the world, including Italian, Indian, Mexican, Thai and more!

British food is mostly famous for the English Breakfast, Fish and Chips, Sunday Roast, and Shepherd’s Pie.

The tradition to have Sunday Roast goes back centuries and it started as a meal to bring the family together. The meal consists of roast meat, potatoes, vegetables, gravy, and Yorkshire Pudding (pastry).

If you want to go for a Sunday roast, you can check out Blacklock and Hawksmoor in central London. When my mom visited me in London I took here to the Blacklock Soho and she loved it a lot!

There is also Secret Food Tour in London where you can have the best British food while also exploring London!

GO ON A THAMES CRUISE

The Thames River and the Tower Bridge in London, England.

The River Thames flows through London and a river cruise is a good way to see the famous attractions in the city such as the Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.

The London river cruises usually last between 1-2 hours and it includes a guide too. The river cruises don’t last too long, but you have a guide on the boat so you can learn some new historical information about London.

If you don’t want to pay for the cruises, there are also public boats in London that take you through pretty much on the same route as the paid cruises.

The public boats are run by the Uber Boats by the Thames Clippers, and you can even pay for the boat fare with an Oyster Card.

If you don’t want to pay for a river cruise, the public boats are a great option. You get to go on a cruise and see the city for an affordable price.

BUY FLOWERS AT THE COLUMBIA ROAD FLOWER MARKET

The Columbia Road Flower Market runs every Sunday from 8 am to around 3 pm.

The weather is pretty warm in June, so being outdoors and shopping for flowers is a great activity.

The flower market is popular and can get busy around noon, so if you want to avoid the crowds, it is best to arrive early around 9 am.

There are a couple of cafes and vintage shops on Columbia Road and you can easily spend the morning here, shopping for flowers and having a coffee.

You may be able to get some discounted flowers if you go later in the afternoon around 2 pm. Although, at that time, there are less flowers available than if you go early.

HANG OUT AT CAMDEN MARKET

Camden Market is a cool place in London and there are many cool things to do there. They have restaurants, food stalls, bars, second-hand bookshops, and vintage clothes shops.

If you love books, it is a great place to browse books and find some second hand books at a good price. I could browse for books for hours in Camden and find some books at a good price.

The vintage shops are a great place to buy something unique or funny, or even to get a souvenir to take home! Camden Market has so many great things and I could easily spend at least half a day there.

VISIT THE HARRY POTTER FILM STUDIOS

The Harry Potter tour usually takes around 7 hours and you get to see the behind the scenes at the Warner Bros Studios in Watford.

You can walk around the set and also see the costumes that were used in the movies. It is a pretty cool experience and if you have time while in London, it is totally worth checking out!

You can either sign up to a tour or plan the trip on your own. If you plan it on your own, the trains go from London Euston Station to Watford Junction.

Once you get to Watford Junction, there are shuttle buses every 30 minutes that operate between Watford Junction and the Harry Potter Warner Bros Studios. The shuttle bus is free for those that have an entry ticket to the studio.

EAT AT THE BOROUGH MARKET

The Borough Market is famous for its food stalls, restaurants, and bars. If you love food and snacking, definitely check it out while you are in London.

They sell many different delicacies, such as cured meat, cheese, street food, bakery items, fresh vegetables and fruits. It’s really a great place for food lovers!

Whenever I visited it on the weekends or during lunch hours, it was always very busy, so my recommendation is that the best time to visit the market is during the week (outside of lunch hours).

GO SHOPPING IN LONDON

Double-decker bus and shops on Oxford Street, London.
Oxford Street, London

London is famous for fashion, so if you like fashion, you got to go shopping! There are many clothes shops from budget to luxury brands, so there is everything for all budgets.

The most famous places for fashion in London are Oxford Street and Regent Street. They are right next to each other and there are many fashion brands you can choose from.

Oxford Street is the biggest shopping street in Europe and it has more than 300 shops. Apart from clothes shops, there are also jewellery, electronics and homeware shops.

In June every year, they also organize a a short version of London Fashion week. It is hard to get entry to the London Fashion Week events but usually they run some competitions and you may be able to win a ticket.

HANG OUT AT COVENT GARDEN

People walking outside Covent Garden in London, UK.
Covent Garden, London

Covent Garden has many restaurants, bars, and shops. There are usually some street performers that are fun to watch and it draws in big crowds.

What I like the most about Covent Garden is that it has many narrow little streets and alleys, with lots of hidden gems – it’s like you can just walk around, “get lost” and always ed up somewhere discovering something new!

Covent Garden is great but it is also a very touristy place in London. It can get very busy and crowded so make sure to watch out for your valuables.

VISIT THE LONDON ZOO

A meerkat at the London Zoo in England.
London Zoo
  • London Zoo Opening Times: 10 am – 6 pm
  • London Zoo Entry Price: Weekday: GBP 27-31, Weekend: GBP 33

The London Zoo opened in 1828 and it is located in Regent’s Park near Camden. The zoo is pretty big and when we visited, it took us around 2-3 hours to cover the whole area.

We went on a weekend and found that it was very busy. So, from my experience, I recommend that in case you have time to visit the zoo on a weekday, it should be better to avoid the crowds.

The enclosures are well maintained and built in a way that you get to see the animals from pretty close up. Some of the animals that you can see at the zoo are tigers, lions, penguins and also baby gorillas.
