Langtang Valley Trek: 6, 7 & 8 Days Itinerary (2025)
LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT THE LANGTANG VALLEY TREK?
You’ve come to the right place! I loved the Langtang Valley Trek in Nepal and it is great trek near Kathmandu that is good also for beginners.
The trail is easy to follow and you can also trek it solo (without a guide). You just need to get the Langtang National Park Valley Permit – that you can get in Dhunche on the way to Syabrubesi.
Langtang is one of the most popular treks in Nepal after Everest and Annapurna Base Camp. It is near Kathmandu, so you don’t have to travel too far to get to the starting point.
The best is to complete the Langtang Trek in 7-8 days (including transport days), which gives you enough time to enjoy the trek and not feel like you have to rush back to Kathmandu.
The most famous village along the trek is Langtang Village, but from there you can go even higher, to Kyanjin Gompa. From Kyanjin Gompa you can also hike up to Lower Kyanjin Ri (4,300 metres). Lower Kyanjin Ri is great as you can make it as a half day hike and then go back to Kyanjin Gompa or even Langtang Village.
Here is everything you need to know about the Langtang Valley Trek including itinerary, best time to visit, trekking costs, what to pack, permits, guide rules and how to trek it solo!
Langtang Valley Trek Information
Difficulty
The Langtang Valley Trek difficulty level is easy. It is a good trek for beginners or those looking for an easy trek in Nepal.
The trail to Langtang is easy to walk, with not that much uphill and very few stairs (so it is also easy on the knees).
Even though Langtang is considered as an easy trek, you should still watch out for altitude sickness. Many people get altitude sickness in Langtang Village, so watch out for symptoms and descend to lower altitude if you feel unwell.
Langtang is a popular trek in Nepal and it is located close to Kathmandu. As it is easy to reach from Kathmandu, Langtang is great if you are short on time and want to complete a trek in a week (including transport days).
Best Time for Langtang Valley Trek

The best time for the Langtang Valley Trek is between October to mid-December and from mid-February to May.
Autumn and Spring are generally the best times to trek in Nepal, thus those are the best times to trek in Langtang too.
During Autumn and Spring, the weather is the best for trekking (no rain, no snow) and you get some of the best views as well.
However, Autumn and Spring times tend to get very crowded for trekking in Nepal.
If you want to trek Langtang at a time when the weather is good but not that crowded then the end of November/beginning of December (the end of the peak Autumn season), or end of February (beginning of Spring trekking season) are good times.
Permits

Permit Needed: Langtang Valley National Park Permit: this is the only permit you need. No need for mandatory guide or TIMS.
- You can get the Langtang Valley National Park Permit in Dhunche (Dhunche is a town on the way to Syabrubesi and all the buses and jeeps stop here for passengers to get the Langtang National Park Permit).
 - It is also possible to get the permit in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board but to be honest, if you want to save time, you can just get the permit in Dhunche. Almost everyone gets their permits in Dhunche and the bus/jeep waits until everyone gets their permits. There is also a checkpoint next to the ticket office where they check your passport details.

The price of the Langtang Valley National Park Permit is Rs. 3,000 for foreigners, Rs 1,500 for SAARC, and Rs. 100 for Nepali citizens.
If you are a foreign national, make sure to have a couple of copies of your passport for the trip as they will ask for it at various checkpoints when you go from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi.
If you run out of the paper copies of your passport, you can also just show a digital copy of your passport.
Guide Rules
It is not mandatory or required to have a trekking guide for the Langtang Valley Trek in Nepal. Although, the Government of Nepal tried to enforce a rule of mandatory guides for foreign trekkers, in reality it has not been implemented.
The only permit you need is the Langtang Valley National Park Permit (no need for TIMS or any other permit). Other than getting the permit to the national park, you can trek solo.
I also organize treks in Nepal:
✔️ Langtang Valley Trek
✔️ Everest Base Camp
✔️ Annapurna Base Camp & more!
Langtang Valley Trek Solo
The Langtang Valley Trek is considered as easy so it is great for beginner trekkers or those that are looking for an easy trek near Kathmandu. Langtang is also a popular trek, so you will also meet other trekkers on the way.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow so you can even complete it as a solo trekker. Actually, once you start trekking, there is basically only one trail to follow and it goes along the Langtang River.
For Langtang Valley, all you need is the Langtang Valley National Park Permit, and other than that, you can trek solo.
There are some checkpoints where they check your passport and permit. If you are trekking solo, they will just put you down as “FIT” (Free Individual Trekker) in their log books. “FIT” means an independent trekker in Nepal, those that are trekking without a guide.
For navigating trekking trails in Nepal, I usually use the maps.me app (maps.me on the Apple Store, maps.me on Google Play). After you download the map, you will be able to follow the map even if you are offline (when no network or data is available).
I found the trail was so easy to follow that I did not even have to use maps.me for navigation but you should definitely have it downloaded for back up.

Network Coverage
- Ncell: No network after Bamboo (good network from Syabrubesi to Bamboo)
 - Namaste (Nepal Telecom): some network coverage after Bamboo (good network from Syabrubesi to Bamboo)

If you are getting a Nepali SIM card, it is best if you choose Namaste (Nepal Telecom).
Namaste (Nepal Telecom) has a slightly better coverage in the mountains but it is still not the best, so do not expect uninterrupted data. It is more like you may be able to get some unexpected connection for a few minutes, than having continuous network.
Langtang Valley Trek Map

The trekking route for the Langtang Valley Trek generally follows the following route and itinerary:
- Syabrubesi (1,430 m) to Lama Hotel (2,512 m)
 - Lama Hotel (2,512 m) to Langtang Village (3,450 m)
 - Langtang Village (3,450 m) to Kyanjin Gompa (3,860 m): option to hike up to Kyanjin Ri (4,300 m) the same day or next morning – depending on how much time or energy you have
 - Kyanjin Gompa (3,860 m) to Lama Hotel (2,512 m)
 - Lama Hotel (2,512 m) to Syabrubesi (1,430 m)

The most popular route is to trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel via the trail in Domen and Bamboo.
There is an alternative trail that goes from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel via Sherpagaon. This trail is much harder than the trail via Domen/Bamboo, so consider your fitness level when picking the trail.
On a positive note, the trail visa Sherpagaon is said to be much more beautiful so if you are fit enough, you can try that trail.
Another option is to take the trail via Sherpagaon on the way back, which is supposed to be easier when you are coming back downhill to Syabrubesi.
Langtang Trek Itinerary: 5, 6, 7 & 8 Days

Langtang Trek 5 Days
There are many itineraries online for 5 Days Langtang Valley Trek. To be honest, I found that 5 days for Langtang (including transport to and from Syabrubesi, the starting point) is way too short.
Even if you take a private jeep, 5 days will be very rushed. In my opinion, if you go to Langtang, it is good if you have at least 6 days. 6 days Langtang itinerary is also pushing it, but it is more manageable.
Langtang Valley Trek 6 Days (4.5 days trekking, 1.5 days travel)

This is the trek itinerary I did, and oh I wish we had more time. Although it was just about possible to complete it in 6 days, if we had 1-2 more days, we would have enjoyed it much more.
To trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lower Kyanjin Ri and then trek back to Syabrubesi all in 2 days, it’s very tiring.
Nevertheless, a lot of people trek this itinerary (I did too) and it is possible to complete it. Just know ahead that it will be tiring and if you want a less rushed and more relaxed trek, then plan Langtang for at least 7 days.
Langtang Valley Trek 6 Days Itinerary:

- Day 1: Kathmandu to Syabrubesi bus/jeep (8 hours by bus, 5 hours by private jeep)
 - Day 2: Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel via Domen/Bamboo (11 km, 5 hours trek)
 - Day 3: Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (12 km, 8 hours trek)
 - Day 4: Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (option to hike up to Kyanjin Ri) (6.5 km, 4 hours trek + 4 hours hike to Lower Kyanjin Ri)
 - Day 5: Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (18 km, 9 hours trek)
 - Day 6: Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi, then private jeep to Kathmandu (11 km, 4 hours trek + 5 hours jeep back to Kathmandu)

Langtang Valley Trek 7 Days (5 days trekking, 2 days travel)

Many people plan Langtang for 7 days, which is one of the most ideal timeline. If you have one more day, you can also make it 8 days, which gives you even more time to enjoy the trek.
If you are very fit and an active trekker, you may not need to expand it to 7 days but it is good to have a full week for trekking in Langtang.
You can also just decide on the way, how far you will go each day and adjust your itinerary depending on your fitness level and how you get on each day.
Langtang Valley Trek 7 Days Itinerary:

 - Day 6: Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi via Bamboo/Domen (11 km, 4 hours trek)
 - Day 7: Bus back to Kathmandu (8 hours by bus back to Kathmandu)

Langtang Valley Trek 8 Days (6 days trekking, 2 days travel)

If you have 8 days for Langtang, it will give you the most relaxed trekking experience. You will have enough time to hike up to Kyanjin Ri, trek through Sherpagaon on the way back, and have separate travel days.
Many people rush back to Syabrubesi to catch the bus in the morning or to get a jeep to get back to Kathmandu.
If you have extra time, you don’t have to rush back to Syabrubesi. You can just trek back at a normal pace and catch the bus to Kathmandu the next day.
Langtang Valley Trek 8 Days Itinerary:

- Day 1: Kathmandu to Sybrubesi bus/jeep (8 hours by bus, 5 hours by private jeep)
 - Day 2: Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel via Domen/Bamboo (11 km, 5 hours trek)
 - Day 3: Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (12 km, 8 hours trek)
 - Day 4: Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (6.5 km, 4 hours trek)
 - Day 5: Kyanjin Gompa to Kyanjin Ri and return back to Kyanjin Gompa (4 hours hike to Kyanjin Ri: 2.5 hours up + 1.5 hours back down to Kyanjin Gompa)
 - Day 6: Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (18 km, 9 hours trek)
 - Day 7: Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi via Bamboo/Domen (11 km, 4 hours trek) (option to trek from Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi via Sherpagaon)
 - Day 8: Bus back to Kathmandu (8 hours by bus back to Kathmandu)

How to Get from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi by Bus/Jeep
Syabrubesi is the starting point to the Langtang Valley Trek and you can easily get a bus or jeep ticket from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi.
Syabrubesi is 120 km from Kathmandu and it takes around 8 hours to get there by bus, and 5 hours by private jeep.
The buses leave every day between 6-8 am from Machhapokhari. The bus ticket costs Rs. 900, while the private jeep costs around Rs. 13,000 (USD 100).
Where to Buy the Bus/Jeep Ticket to Syabrubesi

You can buy the bus/jeep tickets at travel agents in Thamel, online on Bussewa or directly at the ticket counters in Machhapokhari (Kathmandu).
Generally, everyone buys their ticket 1-2 days before starting the trip and you don’t have to plan too far in advance when planning a trip in Nepal.
Kathmandu to Syabrubesi Bus
The bus ticket from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi costs Rs. 900. The buses leave between 6-8 am from Machhapokhari and takes about 8 hours to get to Syabrubesi.
The buses that operate between Kathmandu and Syabrubesi are AC/Deluxe buses. There are no tourist buses available on this route, but the AC/Deluxe buses are the second best option after the tourist buses in Nepal.
Kathmandu to Syabrubesi Jeep

It is also possible to take a jeep to Syabrubesi. You can take a shared jeep or hire a private jeep.
The shared jeeps generally tend to get very crowded in Nepal with many people in one car.
Thus, if you are considering taking a jeep, it is better to hire a private jeep and split the costs with your friends or look for a few people to share the jeep with. This way, the number of people is limited but you also don’t have to pay the full amount yourself.
The private jeep takes 5 hours from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and costs around Rs. 13,000 (USD 100).
If you are a foreigner booking a private jeep, the prices tend to be a bit more expensive, around USD 150-200. So, if you are booking a private jeep and want to save money, try to bargain the price closer to USD 100.
To be honest, foreigners might not be able to get the lower price for the jeep, but you should still try.
Bus vs Jeep: Which One is Better for You?
Bus vs jeeps: it depends! The private jeep is the most comfortable option. But if you want to save money and deciding between the bus or shared jeeps, then you should go for the bus.
The bus is generally more comfortable than the shared jeep. This is due to that the shared jeeps can get crowded with passengers.
The bus is a bit more comfortable because you have your own seat at least. If you take the bus, make sure to get a seat in the front as it gets very bumpy towards the back of the bus.
If you go for the private jeep, you can split the cost with friends or try to find other travellers to share the jeep with. This way, the jeep will only be shared by a few people and you can split the cost as well.
Syabrubesi to Kathmandu by Bus/Jeep (Return Trip)
Once you get back to Sybrubesi, you have the option to take the bus or jeep back to Kathmandu. The bus ticket costs Rs. 900, while a private jeep is around Rs. 13,000 (USD 100).
The buses leave around 8-9 am in the morning, so if you want to take the bus, you’d have to get to Syabrubesi the day before.
If you take a jeep from Sybrubesi to Kathmandu, then your schedule is bit more flexible. You can book a private jeep, or go with a shared jeep.
The private jeep will take you anytime that’s convenient for you, while for the shared jeeps, you might have to wait a little until it gets full with passengers.
If you are traveling without a guide, you should ask around for the jeeps when you arrive in Syabrubesi – at the beginning of your trek. Thus, once you are on the way back to Syabrubesi after completing the Langtang Trek, you can already contact the jeep driver and arrange the jeep before getting back to Syabrubesi.

Langtang Valley Trek Packing List

I did the Langtang Valley trek without a guide or porter and carried only a 28 litres backpack. The days are not too difficult and if you pack lightly, it won’t be too difficult to carry your own backpack.
I think for me, most of the weight was honestly the 2 water bottles that I carried. I usually try to pack less for treks and wear the same clothes sometimes even 2-3 times during the trek.
As you get higher up, it also gets colder. It is not just that shower facilities and hot water become less available, it is also too cold to take a shower. As it gets cold, sometimes you even feel like not getting changed.
It is good to prepare well for a trek and pack all the necessary items, however, you should also try to limit it and carry just the most essential items. Otherwise your backpack will be too heavy.
Here is what I packed for a 6 days Langtang Valley Trek (4.5 days trekking, 1.5 days travel):
Clothes:
- Trekking shoes x1
 - Slippers/Flip Flops x1
 - Quick dry T-shirts x3
 - Long-sleeve T-shirt x1
 - Leggings/trekking pants x2
 - Fleece jumper x1
 - Wind jacket x1
 - Thermal base layer (top and bottom) for sleeping x1
 - Hat, scarf/buff, gloves x 1
 - Socks: 2x thin socks, 1x thick socks
 - Underwear x4
 - Sports bra x2 (for women)
 - Cap/Sunhat x1

Other Items:
- Sleeping bag liner x1
 - Headlamp x1
 - Sunscreen x1
 - Trekking poles x1
 - Sunglasses x1
 - Medicine for diarrhoea, headache and cold
 - Nalgene bottle (You can ask in your teahouse at night to fill it with hot water. Then, you can use it as a “heater” and put it inside your sleeping bag liner or blanket to keep you warm at night).
 - Trekking snacks, dried fruits
 - Tissues, toilet paper roll (there is no toilet paper in the teahouses in Nepal so you have to bring yours. It is possible to buy toilet paper in the teahouses but they will be more expensive than buying them in Kathmandu).

Langtang Valley Trek Teahouses

Syabrubesi Hotels
Most of the hotels in Syabrubesi are not available to book online but you can just book a room in person after you arrive. There are many hotels in Syabrubesi so you can find a hotel on the spot, you don’t have to worry about all the places being sold out.
The rooms cost around Rs. 1,000 that comes with private bathroom and hot water. If you want to do some pre-planning, you can check the reviews on google maps for some of the better rated hotels.
Actually, Syabrubesi is like a small town full of hotels, as it caters to the trekkers starting or finishing trekking in Langtang. The hotels in Syabrubesi are a little bit more modern than the teahouses you find along the Langtang trek.
Lama Hotel Teahouses

Lama Hotel: Rs. 1,000/night for 2 people. The teahouse called Lama Hotel is the best teahouse in Lama Hotel. The village of Lama Hotel and the teahouses in general are not so well developed and it is hard to find a comfortable teahouse.
There is no network coverage in Lama Hotel and it is hard to find a teahouse with wifi here. The teahouse Lama Hotel has wifi for Rs. 500, so if you want to use wifi, get a place in the Lama Hotel teahouse.
Langtang Village Teahouses

Once you get to Langtang Village, you have much more options for teahouses. The teahouses cost between Rs. 1,000-1,500/ night for a twin room.
You can find some teahouses that have attached bathrooms even with hot water, so it is worth to look around. We stayed in the Village View Hotel and Lodge and got a room with private bathroom with hot water.
Kyanjin Gompa Teahouses

Namaste Guest House : Rs. 1,000-1,500/night for 2 people. Some of the rooms have an attached toilet, which is great.
The food prices are the highest in Kyanjin Gompa as it is the higher up, so make sure to have cash for food that could cost around Rs. 900/meal.
Langtang Valley Trek Cost
In total, I spent Rs. 20,000 (USD 150) per person for a 6 days Langtang Valley trek. This does not include costs for a trekking guide or porter as I usually just trek solo or with friends.
Price of Rooms in Teahouses
The prices of rooms are between Rs. 1,000-1,500 for 2 people per night in a twin room.
Usually, some of the teahouses have rooms with attached bathroom – sometimes even with hot water for shower.
Other times, there is shared bathroom in the teahouse that has hot water for showers. To access it you can ask, and they will unlock the door for you for the shower.
Price of Food in Teahouses

There is usually an unwritten rule that the teahouse you are staying in is also the place that you will be having your meals too.
A meal generally costs around Rs. 600-900 in each teahouse along the trail. If you want to buy beer, it can cost up to Rs. 900 for a can.
Price of Other Items (in Teahouses)
- Wifi: Rs. 500
 - Charging phone: Rs. 500
 - Hot water bottle refill: Rs. 300
 - Hot Shower: Rs. 500

Total Cost for 1 Person
We spent around Rs. 20,000/person for a 6 days Langtang Valley trek including the bus tickets (to and from Kathmandu) and excluding guide costs.
Langtang Valley is a very popular trek and thus the prices have also become pretty expensive. You should plan at least Rs. 20,000 (USD 150) per person per trip as it is the minimum you will spend.
If you want to get wifi, hot shower or beer along the trek, you should take some extra cash.
We trekked without a guide or porter, so we did not have expenses for that. If you go by a guide, the trekking guide costs at least USD 25/day.
There is an ATM in Syabrubesi, but it is best if you withdraw cash in Kathmandu.
