Taxi Apps

Bolt

There is no Uber or Grab in Hungary but the Bolt taxi app works the same.

Hungary has had some strict laws when it comes to taxis, mainly prohibiting taxi apps like Uber.

Bolt is the only taxi app which is similar to Uber and has lower prices than the two other main taxi companies in Hungary (FőTaxi and CityTaxi).

FőTaxi and CityTaxi

FőTaxi and CityTaxi are the two main taxi companies in Hungary. They have the same fare and whether you order the taxi through their apps or through the customer phone line, you will get the same prices.

The good thing is that you can also pre-order taxis through their apps. After pre-ordering the taxi, you usually get a call from a customer service agent to confirm your order.

Prices: Base fare when you start your trip: HUF 1,100 (USD 3) + distance-based fare (depending on how many kms far you go): HUF 440/km (USD 1.20/km).

Food Delivery Apps

Foodora

Foodora is one of the most popular apps for food delivery in Hungary. It used to be Foodpanda but then it changed to Foodora.

Funnily, it’s logo still has that bright pink colour that Foodpanda is known for. The options for food is pretty wide-range and the delivery is pretty good too.

Wolt

Wolt is another popular app for food delivery.

It has slightly different restaurants than Foodora, so the restaurants you don’t have on Foodora you will find on Wolt, and the restaurants you don’t have on Wolt, you will find on Foodora. So in a way, Wolt and Foodora supplement each other.

Kifli

Kifli is more like an online grocery shop.

The name Kifli comes from a typical Hungarian pastry that looks like a roll in a crescent shape.

You can find pretty much everything on Kifli, from fruits and veggies to meat, dairy, plant-based and bakery items. In addition, they also have baby products, cleaning items, and health and beauty products.

Public Transport App

Budapest GO

Budapest GO is a popular app for public transport in Budapest. You can buy tickets online and then validate your ticket through scanning the code you find on the side of the bus.

When you download the app, you will have to set up your profile and register your bank account details, so you will be able to purchase tickets.

The great thing about the app is that it also has a journey planner option, so you can check how to take buses, metro or the trams.

Lime

Getting around Budapest by scooter has become very popular in the last few years. You will find scooters available for rent all over Budapest – even in the furthest suburbs of the city.

If you download the Lime app, you will be able to pay for the scooter. Once your time is up, you can leave the scooter wherever you are and the next person will hire it from there.
